Panel #1: The Role of the Energy Sector in Canada’s Economy Today and in the Future

The energy sector is a key driver of Canada's economy. In 2023, it directly
employed 285,600 individuals and indirectly supported an additional 411,400 jobs, according to Natural Resources Canada's Energy Fact Book. During the same year, Canada exported $199.1 billion in energy to 123 countries, with the United States being the largest recipient. In contrast, Canada imported $57.9 billion worth of energy. As Canada moves toward a lower-carbon future, leaders are advancing the green transition by investing in renewable energy, promoting energy efficiency, and reducing emissions. This panel will explore these economic and environmental indicators as Canada shapes its sustainable energy future.
