What is the Role of the Energy Sector in Canada’s Economy Today, and in the Future?

The Energy sector plays a pivotal role in Canada’s economy and in 2022 alone, 290,300 people were directly employed from this sector and 405,800 indirectly employed as per Natural Resource Canada’s Energy Fact Book. Additionally, in 2022, energy exports worth $240.5 billion were sent to 133 countries, with the United States as the primary recipient. Meanwhile, Canada imported $65.3 billion of energy1. This panel will dive into better understanding these economic and environmental indictors as Canada transitions to a low-carbon future.
